MENTAL HEALTH

What is mental health?

Mental health refers to the social, emotional, and psychological components of your well-being that affect the way you think, act, and feel. Your ability to manage stress, resolve conflicts, and relate to your peers largely depends on the state of your mental health. That’s why caring for your mental and physical health are equally important.

What influences mental health?

As you age, many factors can influence your mental health, including:

  1. Genetics
  2. Brain chemistry
  3. Interpersonal relationships
  4. Mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.)
  5. Traumatic life experiences
  6. Economic hardship
  7. Physical health

At Journey2Wellness, LLC, we can help identify factors in your life that are contributing to your mental health challenges to determine the appropriate treatment.

What are the most common mental health disorders?

Mental health disorders affect millions of Americans each year. While many mental health disorders can affect your mood and behavior, the most common are:

Depression

Depression is a common mental health disorder that causes feelings of sadness or hopelessness. Individuals with depression often lose interest in activities they once loved, disconnect from family and friends, and experience changes in their sleep habits. Counseling and medication can help you navigate the physical and mental challenges of depression.

Anxiety

Anxiety disorders lead to excessive worry or fear. There are many different anxiety disorders, including phobias, that can interfere with your quality of life. Identifying the cause of your anxiety allows us to create an individualized treatment plan for you.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a disorder that impacts your ability to concentrate, stay organized, and control impulsive behaviors and emotions. Though many individuals receive an ADHD diagnosis during childhood, the disorder can continue through adulthood.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health disorder that causes severe mood swings, including mania (high-energy periods) and depressive episodes.

How can I improve my mental health?

Many lifestyle modifications and treatments can help improve your mental health. After a complete evaluation, we can create an individualized treatment plan for you that may include:

  1. Dietary changes
  2. Increasing exercise
  3. Limiting alcohol and caffeine consumption
  4. Medication
  5. Supplements
  6. Stress management
  7. Coping strategies
  8. Counseling or therapy
  9. Changes in sleep habits

Accelerated Resolution Therapy © (ART)

WHAT IS ART?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy© is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies but shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly (usually within 1-5 sessions). Clients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, sexual abuse and many other mental and physical conditions can experience remarkable benefits starting in the first session. ART is not hypnosis.

The client is always in control of the entire ART session, with the therapist guiding the process. Although some traumatic experiences such as rape, combat experiences, or the loss of a loved one can be very painful to think about or visualize, the therapy rapidly moves clients beyond the place where they are stuck in these experiences toward growth and positive changes. The process is very straightforward, using relaxing eye movements and a technique called Voluntary Memory/Image Replacement to change how the negative images are stored in the brain. The treatment is grounded in well-established psychotherapy techniques, and the result is that traumas and difficult life experiences will no longer trigger strong emotions or physical reactions. Importantly, clients do not even have to talk about their traumas or difficult life experiences with the therapist to achieve recovery.

For more information about ART, please watch Laney Rosenzweig, who successfully treated a patient with fibromyalgia and another patient with a driving fear using ART.
